Bantam Chickens with Style

I have always thought that if I ever raised animals, I would try to raise "heirloom" animals--that is, animals of a rare breed. The following types of bantam chickens are calm/docile, rare, very cold hardy and good for eggs and meat. Not that we've chosen chickens mind you, just keeping a short list, if you will. Why heirlooms? For fun, I love unique, out of the ordinary things! Also, if more people raise rare animals, these unusual breeds can be kept alive. I like the thought of saving species from extinction. I think it's cool!

Brahma

Orpington (black, blue, white)

Plymouth Rock (buff--pictured below; also, silver penciled, columbian, blue)

Sussex

Wyandotte (all colors except silver and gold)

Aren't they colorful and...cute?

  1. Did I tell you we're thinking about having a few chickens now that we have our own place?! I kind of like the Orpingtons- supposedly they're extremely sweet and people friendly, gentle chickens. We're going to talk about possibly doing it when we get back from MN, perhaps in Aug. Looks like we'll have lots of fun, 'out of the ordinary' things to talk about! Hope to see you guys- we'll be there from Jul 3-24th.
